Today I\u2019d like to share the chapter on our blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s see how to use email to re-engage lost leads.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to bring back those who didn\u2019t convert?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lost leads &#8211; the ones who took your product for a run, but decided not to go through with it when the trial ended &#8211; are often a neglected audience in SaaS businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when your trial users don\u2019t convert, don\u2019t abandon hope yet, all of you who offer free trials. There\u2019s still a chance to bring them back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duh &#8211; with email.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How do you know which leads are worth reigniting the conversation with?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s first take a look at the list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you just send a campaign to all of those who didn\u2019t convert? Or do you single out a specific group, e.g. those who were more invested?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As SaaS user onboarding specialist Aaron Krall says, it depends on how big the list is and on the customer value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve got, let\u2019s say, 100,000 expired trials, there\u2019s no way to analyze at scale each and every lead to figure out why they cancelled or how interested they were. Take out the big guns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you put in the opening email?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reintroduce yourself and offer the prospects\u2019 some context &#8211; remind them who you are and what your tool does<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tell them how come you\u2019ve got their email address<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus on providing them value, not selling &#8211; offer to share a valuable piece of content or information on a topic you believe they\u2019d be interested in<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">give them a way to opt-out &#8211; this might actually nudge them to respond<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or you might reach out to them after you\u2019ve rolled out a new important feature, letting them know that your product has changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron\u2019s approach here is to run a troubleshooting campaign to find out the reason the leads didn\u2019t move on to a paid plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This campaign should be super simple, fun and engaging for the user. It\u2019s really hard to get feedback from a user once the trial is over and they didn\u2019t convert, so you\u2019ve got to have fun with that initial troubleshooting email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this, his strategy involves breaking up the emails into 5 different categories and sending at least 2 messages a month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Aaron, one category which is mostly overlooked is \u201cobjections\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually someone didn\u2019t buy because of an objection (assuming they\u2019re the right fit), so addressing these objections in addition to showing prospects how your tool can solve their problems and make their life easier is what will bring them back into the tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing that might entice them to re-try is offering to extend the trial, creating very little risk to come back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sequence goes on until the prospect unsubscribes, signs up for the trial again, or doesn\u2019t open any of the emails &#8212; in which case it\u2019s best to remove them from the list to maintain a high deliverability rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Remember that you can\u2019t keep prospects\u2019 data in your files forever, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although personal data acts, such as GDPR, don\u2019t state precisely for how long it is OK to store it, you need to have a very good and specific reason for doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how an opening email in a lost lead re-engagement sequence could look like:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><article class=\"email-template\">\n    <div class=\"email-template-top-bar email-template__bar\">\n      <span class=\"email-template-top-bar__button\"><\/span>\n      <span class=\"email-template-top-bar__button\"><\/span>\n      <span class=\"email-template-top-bar__button\"><\/span>\n    <\/div>\n        <div class=\"email-template__content\">\n      <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hey {{First_Name}},<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(your company)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been a couple months since you tested <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(your product)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
